This was a challenge issued by Janne CDC to pick two numbers between 1 and 20, and any CD, the first number is the track, and second number is the line of the song. Here is the result of the challenge, with the usual disclaimers: no money made from this, and the characters of Connor and Rachel belong to someone else. It was a toss up between Connor and Heather, or Duncan and Tessa, or maybe Amanda and Duncan... I could go on, but the artist made the decision for me.

Loving You

Connor passed the partially open door of Rachel's bedroom as the phone rang. He paused a moment, listening to the sound of his daughter's voice as she answered the call.

"Hello, Annie. Have you had a chance to listen to it yet? He's so dreamy!" He had intended to walk away, but her words reeled him in. When in the hell did she become a boy crazy teenager? Why haven't I noticed before? He had to admit maybe he had noticed, but lived in denial. He would rather she stayed his sweet little girl, only needing her dad. God! Boys! What have I done to deserve this?

He shook his head violently to clear it. What am I thinking? She wasn't a teenager at all, but in her twenties. He had a hard time remembering such things when she chatted on the phone with her friends, her soft laughter and giggles those of a younger lady. But she was still his daughter, and he wasn't sure he was ready to share her with anyone of the male persuasion. "Cretins! The lot of them!"

Rachel's voice lowered and he realized he had spoken aloud. He slunk down the hall, and soon his adopted daughter found him in the kitchen, preparing dinner. "Hey, Dad, what can I do to help?"

"Make the salad."

"Tossed or fruit?"

"Tossed."

"That was Annie on the phone," Rachel commented as she cut the tomato into bite-size pieces. "She's moving to the west coast."

"You can always visit her."

"I know, but it isn't quite the same as knowing she's just a short drive away."

Connor was silent for a moment as his heart flooded with dread. "Did you want to move to the west coast too?"

"Heavens, no! I'd miss you too much."

"Someday, you'll meet someone, Rachel. I don't want to hold you back from a life you deserve of a family, of children and grandchildren." I did that to Heather but we at least had each other to love, he thought.

"When I find a cretin I love as much as you, you old curmudgeon, I'll let you know."

"Curmudgeon, am I?"

"Mmmm. Yes. I thought we had some cucumbers," she said as she rummaged around in the refrigerator.

"On the counter top. It must have rolled... here it is."

"Thank you." She proceeded to wash, peel and slice the long green vegetable.

"So, who's so dreamy?" Connor couldn't refrain from asking as he drained the pot of boiled potatoes.

"Ha!" she waved the paring knife in his direction. "You were listening outside my room, I thought so. Not only are you a curmudgeon, you're an eavesdropper."

"That didn't answer my question."

"If you must know, I was talking about Elvis."

"Elvis?"

"Presley. The singer. Get with it, Dad. All the girls are wild about him."

"You, too, I imagine."

"I'll admit I go a bit mushy inside when he sings a love song."

"Love song?" Connor scowled, and Rachel laughed softly.

"Don't worry, Pops. Right now, there is only one for me, and you know I'll always love you, no matter what."

His scowl eased, softening his glance with parental love and joy. "I love you, Rachel, and I want you to promise me that if you find someone, you won't hesitate because of me."

"Don't worry, Dad. I won't."

He scowled again and mashed the hell out of the spuds.

Elvis Presley: Heart & Soul
Loving You

track 7 (line 11)
(Jerry Leiber/Mike Stoller)

I will spend my whole life through,
Loving you, loving you.
Winter, summer, springtime, too,
Loving you, loving you.
Makes no diff'rence where I go or what I do.
You know that I'll always be loving you.
If I'm seen with someone new,
Don't be blue, don't be blue.
I'll be faithful I'll be true;
Always true, true to you.
There is only one for me,
And you know who.
You know that I'll always be,
Loving you.
